Meet Visha Govender | Past Student Feature
Past student, Visha Govender, completed the UCT Operations Management online short course in March 2013. She works as a Client Support Centre Team Leader, and decided to take the course to better understand how to establish efficient operations in her workplace. We chatted to her and found out more about her experience on the course.
Tell us a bit about who you are, both personally and professionally?
After completing a Business Science degree in 2010, I ventured to Johannesburg to start my first job at Investec Private Bank. I started as a Client Support Banking Consultant, and later moved on to be the Subject Matter Expert for the Private Bank Account. I am now a Team Leader with the Client Support Centre.
Why did you decide to take the course?
I decided to take the course after I received an email regarding the GetSmarter learning platform, and the short courses relevant to managers. My role exposes me to the operational workings of the business, which fueled my interest to learn ways of doing things more efficiently.
How has the course helped you in your career?
I have been able to apply much of what I have learned from the course in my day-to-day activities. Most importantly, I now use more efficient ways of process mapping and management.
What was your biggest learning?
My biggest learning was the realisation that I was able to balance a full working day, and complete the weekly assignments by the deadlines.
What did you enjoy most about the online learning model?
I best enjoyed being able to learn at my own pace. The interactivity of the discussion forums, and reading other students’ thoughts and experiences, really helped my learning.
What would you tell a potential student who is considering doing the course?
Should you consider doing any GetSmarter course, be sure that you’re well disciplined. Be sure to cover all the content, as every piece of information is important and really helpful.
Are you planning on taking any more courses in the future? If so, which ones and why?
I would like to attempt other GetSmarter courses, but I have not given thought to which course in particular I will attempt next.
