Meet Kopano Masongoa | GetSmarter Notable Achiever
In recognition of students who stand out from the crowd, GetSmarter’s Notable Achievers campaign highlights a top-performing student each week.
Kopano, who recently finished her University of Cape Town Professional Communication and Office Management course, was chosen as a Notable Achiever for her perseverance and dedication to excellence.
Her Success Manager, Megan Scott, describes Kopano as a student who embraces every challenge, with a great commitment to being a lifelong learner.
We caught up with Kopano to learn more about her desire to further her education, and this is what she had to say.
Why did you decide to take the UCT online short course?
I decided to take the course to gain skills and to better my life, seeing that I was working as a cleaner. I wanted to have a qualification that can be useful to me.
What were your concerns before enrolling on the Professional Communication and Office Management Course? How were your concerns alleviated, and why?
I was nervous at the beginning, thinking it was going to be difficult because it is my first online course and eleven years had passed since I studied something. My fears were alleviated by my success manager who helped me get through every module, and helped me ease back into studying again.
What aspects are you enjoying about learning online with GetSmarter?
Studying online is an advantage because I get to study whenever I have a chance. I can study while I am working.
How do you plan to use the skills you learnt on this course in your career?
I plan to use my skills as a stepping stone. From being an Office Assistant to being an Office Administrator.
What does it mean to you to earn a UCT certificate?
It is such an honour that I had the chance to learn through UCT.
Will you be displaying your certificate?
Yes, definitely.
Our Student Success Team identified you as being an outstanding student. Why do you think you are a Notable Achiever and what advice can you give to others looking to do this course?
I believe I am a Notable Achiever because I did not give up. It was difficult in the beginning, but talking to my Success Manager, Megan Scott, really helped a lot. Our head tutor Claire Payne, thank you for being patient and answering our questions. I did not give up because I want to be proud, make my Company proud, my Manager and my son. Above all, I would like to thank God for giving me strength to push and go on.
It is never too late, do not lose hope.
