Meet Kim Bouwer | GetSmarter Notable Achiever
In recognition of students who stand out from the crowd, GetSmarter’s Notable Achievers campaign highlights a top-performing student each week.
Kim Bouwer is currently studying the University of Cape Town Business Systems Analysis online short course and has been chosen as our Notable Achiever for maintaining a high standard throughout the course.
Her Success Manager nominated Kim due to her high performance on her course, completing modules with an average of 90% despite the gruelling course content. Kim’s assignment submissions are so good they are regularly used as model answers.
Have you studied an online short course before?
Yes, this is my third course with GetSmarter. I previously studied UCT Import & Export Management, and UCT Supply Chain Management.
Why did you decide to take this course?
I want to develop my skills in improving business systems. My current role requires a fair amount of analysis, and this would provide the formal exposure in using my skill set to better perform in my function.
What is it like learning online with GetSmarter?
It has been amazing. The support from Brent (Head Tutor) and Lisa (Success Manager) has been amazing and constantly motivated me to improve. The ease of being able to log in at any time, being a mom and a full-time employee, gives me the flexibility to plan my time.
What were your concerns before enrolling on the UCT Business Systems Analysis course, and how were these alleviated?
My biggest concern was whether I would cope with the level of information and requirements needed, but most of all being able to plan my time effectively to juggle all avenues of day to day life. My coach’s input on how to manage time effectively has been incredibly helpful!
How do you plan to use the skills you learn on this course in your career?
Being part of a young, dynamic company, we are always trying to improve and create new processes/systems. This course will give me the confidence to make a huge impact and contribution to our team.
What does it mean to you to earn a UCT certificate?
It’s a huge privilege to be recognised by one of the world’s best universities!
Will you be hanging it up? If so, where?
I most certainly will! It will hopefully go up as close to our front door as possible, so that anyone entering our house will be able to see it.
What is one of your favourite articles on the GetSmarter Career Advice blog?
My favourite article would definitely be “How To Achieve Work-life Balance.”
What is your favourite module in the course so far?
We have recently covered Module 6: “Modelling Business Processes”. Creating the diagram of a business process was incredibly challenging initially, but once the “penny had dropped” it was the most rewarding module to date!
If you could study another GetSmarter online short course in the future which one would you choose?
I would like to do the UCT Data Analysis online short course, so that I can use my knowledge of analysing business systems to work hand in hand in being able to analyse data efficiently.
Our Student Success Team identified you as being an outstanding student. Why do you think you are a Notable Achiever and what advice can you give to others looking to do this course?
This course is an incredibly challenging course, and without proper commitment could result in a very poor outcome. I am exceptionally committed, and prepared to make a success of my experience, even if it means putting in more time than required to excel. I’m a nerd by nature!
