Why is business systems analysis important to a business? | FAQs
More and more organisations are calling for qualified Business Systems Analysts (BSAs) to help them solve business problems. Brent Combrink, Head Tutor of the University of Cape Town Business Systems Analysis online short course, explains why business analysts are crucial to the success of businesses.
The role of a business systems analyst is important to business because they ensure strategic targets are met. When choosing or designing a business system, without the input and specialised function of a BSA, project failure is a likely outcome. This could be due to many factors, including a poor business case, inadequate feasibility studies, blind spots in the management team and going ahead with a system as the only system – instead of ensuring a backup system is developed as well.

The biggest reason why a business systems analyst matters to a business or any organisation is that, when the job is done well, it helps the business or the organisation to be aligned with its environment and strategic priorities and to make sure that the best decisions in terms of choosing the right systems and designing the right system are made for that business. Without the specialised function of a BSA, we might see the typical causes of project failure and these can range from anything, such as a poor business case, inadequate feasibility studies done, blind spots in the management team and going ahead with a system as the only system instead of having a variety of systems to choose from, poor specifications of systems requirements causing scope creep and budget overruns and maybe even having the wrong people involved in the project or mistimed involvement of different stakeholders in the project.
